Quartz

This is a piece of massive quartz from Graves Mountain.  Strange that it should show this unearthly blue/green in the scan as the color by room light is a pure white.

Other Side

I have been wondering just what the black bits are and today received an answer from a geologist friend

"The black pieces are mostly trilobite fragments.  They preserve differently due to the fact they are composed of chitinous calcium phosphate. This is a very common  preservation for trilobites in the Upper Ordovician in Kentucky."

Faux Bone

Picked this up on a beach on the sunrise side of Michigan.  It was one of the first beaches we visited and I thought it might be some sort of coral because of the covering.  Then, I was sure it was a dinosaur bone, it even has a crack running down the back and if you look closely on the left side, you can see what look like gnaw marks.  But I hit the end with a rock grinder, and, alas, it did not "bleed" red like dino bone and I saw no evidence of structure.  So probably a rock that was covered with some sort of marine life at one time.  But the shape....

Kentucky Shell Hash

I think this is going out to be a yard rock.  It is pretty fragile, so I thought I'd photograph it first.  What I like is the delicate shells which seem to still have a bit of shine to them after, what, 250 million years or so.

small trilobite

A very small trilobite from Kentucky.  I almost missed him.  He or maybe she, I don't know about trilobites, is about 1/8 of an inch long.

Michigan

You never know what you will find where or what adventure lies around.  It's what makes life interesting.  I found this today at a Humane Society Thrift store in North Carolina.  Just me and the dog, but we enjoyed our day.

Sunset from a South Haven neighborhood street.  Everyone came out drinks in hand to salute the day's ending.  It was a beautiful day.

Last of Summer, First of September

last of Summer, first of September ----- Cabbed, well, the upper left one is not finished, rocks picked up on the generous beaches of Michigan.  All the ones at the right contain fossils, the smallest one show a coral.  I'm not sure what the two middle dark ones show.  Bits of this an that, I'm sure.  Iron, I know which showed silvery, but "rusted" quickly.  If you look closely on the lower right edge of the cream colored one, you may see a trilobite.

I think the reddish one on the left is Mary Ellen Jasper, but that has yet to be confirmed.
